Longford FC 0, Blues 1 (15/7/17, City Calling Stadium, Strokestown Road, Longford)
A really big win, this was. Three more points in the bag and the promised land gets a little bit closer. UCD lost to Cobh and and are probably out of the race now. Second placed Cobh at home next Friday will be huge.
New boy Paul Keegan scored the only goal of the game twelve minutes after the break. He reacted magnificently to dreadful clearance by the home keeper to steer the ball to the net....wild celebrations all round by the Blues' fans. Keegan impressed from start to finish, bossing the midfield sector....just what the doctor ordered for the run in.
A decent contingent of fans made the long trip to see the game and they saw quite a good contest played in ideal conditions. The Blues had the best by far of the first half. The second period was probably shared although Longford came strongly in the last quarter and could have snatched an equaliser. A couple of timely interventions at the back by Kenny Browne and Patrick McClean were key.
Derek Daly again was a stand out down the left. Sean Heaney also caught the eye as did Dean O'Halloran when he came on late in the game. Davie Mc Daid did not score but he was worth a couple....really good outing. Shane O' Connor had another good night.
The little Cawkies are next up on Friday night at the RSC. A win against Stephen Henderson's team will give the Blues a nine point lead and almost certainly a run in to the title barring a complete collapse. Dare to dream, Blues' fans.
Don't miss it!
C'mon the Blues!
