26 March, Stradbrook, Co. Dublin
Cabinteely FC 0, Blues 2
On a bitterly cold night in south Co. Dublin the Blues sent their travelling fans home more than contented, having bags another three league points thanks to very determined display. Back to back league wins for the first time since the summer of 2014 - long overdue but how good does it sound?
The pitch was poor as was to be expected and the high wind ruined the game but the reality is that the Blues adapted much better than the home side across the entire pitch. Whatever ball was played on the deck, it was the Blues who did so and to be quite honest Cabinteely were never in the running.
The Blues faced the wind in the first half and limited the opposition to no more than a couple of chances. Kevin Burns came off his line impressively to deal with the best one. At the other end of the field the Blues carved out a few chances, James O'Brien and David O'Leary going closest.
It did not take the Blues long to get on top after the break and they finally found the net courtesy of O'Leary after 50 minutes. The midfielder smacked home a top class volley from outside the box. The result was always going one way after that although it took a really good save from Kevin Burns to keep out a free kick a few minutes later.
On the hour Philly Gorman sealed the result with a super headed goal from a right wing cross by Robbie Buckley.
The best chance after than was a free kick struck by James O'Brien which came back off the post. Eoin Rhodes headed the follow up ball over the bar.
All in all a very satisfactory outing which left the Blues second to Limerick in the table....what a turn around.
Best on the night in a good all round team performance were Robbie Buckley - really excellent at the back and up his line; James O'Brien - busy from start to finish in midfield, Ian Sinnot - solid as a rock alongside fellow defender Colum Nugent and Darren Murphy - outstanding in midfield.
Blues: Kevin Burns, Robbie Buckley, Sean Byrne, Ian Sinnott, Colum Nugent, David O’Leary (Dean Reidy 69), James O’Brien, Darren Murphy, Philly Gorman, Anthony McAlavey (Aaron O’Connor 63), Dylan McGuire (Eoin Rhodes 55). Subs not used: Dean Broaders, James Dermody, Shane Mackey, Corey Chambers.
